The business of
being known

I have spent most of my career working out how businesses, ideas and people should be understood.

Martin Lim speaking with a small group

Across those different roles, the common thread has been clarity.

My name is Martin Lim. My background is in advertising, brand communications, strategic positioning and building businesses. Across those different roles, the common thread has been clarity: finding what matters, deciding what deserves emphasis, and making it easier for other people to understand the value in front of them.

Building companies sharpened that instinct. Strategy becomes much less theoretical when you are responsible for the business, the customer and the outcome. You learn quickly that a strong proposition has to survive outside the presentation deck. People have to understand it, remember it and act on it.

The Known Co.

The Known Co. grew out of applying that same discipline to individuals. A professional reputation already exists in the way someone thinks, works, communicates and is described by others. The interesting part is finding the pattern in all of that and making it clear without turning the person into a manufactured version of themselves.

That is what I bring to The Known Co.: a strategist’s eye for positioning and a focus on whether an idea actually works in practice. I look for the part that matters, the pattern that holds together, and the language that makes it easier for other people to understand. I am interested in whether the result sounds true, whether someone else can repeat it, and whether the person behind it still recognises themselves in it. The gap between self-perception and public understanding is usually where the useful work begins.
